Insane in the mainframe
"Now go left," you say, "Toward the mainframe room. Be careful, but once you get in, you should be safe."
You wait patiently while he makes his way down the corridor. You hear a faint beep--the keycard being accepted by the door.
"It's dark," he says. "But I'm in."
"Okay, now find the central monitor. It should be pretty much right in front of you."
"Hold on. Let me just... I'm getting my cell phone out and using it as a light."
You chuckle. "Heh. Clever."
"Okay, I found it. Just turn it on?"
"Yes. And tell me what you see."
"Okay... it's just a desktop. There are a bunch of icons for different servers."
"Right. Those are all the servers that make up the mainframe. We need to find the one with the personnel records. Do they have useful names or anything?"
"Uh... yeah. This one's called 'PERS_REPORTS_ALL.'"
"Sounds about right. Let's try it. Double-click on it, and the passcode is '9-1-7-4-5-8-4'."
Fifteen seconds pass, and then...
"I'm in." At his words, you let loose a sigh of relief you didn't even know you'd be holding in. After all the work you'd done to get that passcode, it would have been a pretty shitty anticlimax indeed to find that it had been changed.
"Now let's make sure this is the right server," you say. "Find a file and open it, tell me what it is."
"Okay, I'm opening a folder labeled 'D'. All the subfolders are people's names. I'm opening one that says 'Davis, Keiran'. There are five files, basically the same filename except for the datestamp. I'm opening the most recent one... it's a report! It's like that report I had to do on you, when they made me spy on you."
"Perfect," you say. "That's exactly what I need. Now you gotta find the machine in that room with the same name. It should be labeled somewhere."
"Uhhm, yeah, okay. Let me just... " and his voice trails off for a moment. "Got it!"
"So now the monitor should show the new drive. Just copy all the files you can find onto the drive. Quickly! Someone could notice your access at any moment."
"Yeah, yeah, okay. It's copying. Says it'll take about a minute and a half."
"Great. Well, sit tight."
"Will do."
Seconds roll by, and you feel kinda bad for making him do this.
