Part 28
The end of an era.
All business

You keep quiet. You can tell him how you feel after he's safely out of there. Because he will get out of there safely.

Almost a minute has gone by before he breaks the silence in a whisper. "Hey! I hear something."

Your eyes grow wide. "Take cover! Be careful!"

"I know, I--they're coming in."

After that it was yelling and gunshots. You wait in terror to hear Alec scream, but it doesn't come. Then the sounds stop and all you hear is his heavy breathing.

"Are... are you okay?" you ask.

"Uh, yeah. I'm.... I shot them. Both of them."

"It's okay, Alec. They were going to kill you. You did good, now get the drive and let's get out of here!"

"Uh, right. Okay. I'll just... where's the 'Safely Remove'... fuck it, I'm just taking it."

You try to fill in the visual blanks from what you can hear. He opens the door cautiously, pauses a few seconds, and then runs down the corridor. He slows down as he presumably reaches the exit, utters a "whoa shit" under his breath, and leaves the building. The rest is running until he rounds the corner and gets in the car, taking the transmitter from his ear.

"Give me the drive," you say. "And let's blow this popsicle stand."

"Can do, boss," he says breathlessly, as he pushes the car into gear and peels out.

You insert the drive into your smartphone and type in the number you'd been given by your contact at the diner so long ago. Now it's just a matter of hoping.

One minute later, you receive a text message. It says:

Checks out. 187 Everly Terrace.

"Hey," you say, half-laughing. "We're going to 187 Everly Terrace. It's over."

"About fucking time," he says, in that adorably profane way of his.
