Part 28
The end of an era.
Here we go

"Okay," you say. "Now make sure the transmitter is in there tight."

"That's what she said," he mumbles as he double-checks.

"Good. Now here's the pistol and the keycard." He takes them without protest. "You're going to go around that corner, down a block, and go until you see 'Hernando Carpets.' Around the far side of that building is an alley. Go down there, and the second door down is the one you want. It'll be unlocked, but right inside is the real door, and you'll need to use the keycard. I'll keep you up to date as we go along. C'mon, get out of here. Oh wait! Take this flash drive too." You hand him a little USB thumb drive.

"Is that it, or will I need a fake mustache and a bottle of suicide pills?" he cracks.

"Nyuk. Get moving."
He gets out of the car, looks at you with that slightly annoying doe-eyed look, and walks around the corner.

"You can still hear me, right?" you say.

"Yeah," he whispers back.

You wait for him to reach the door and rehearse your vague "plan." He has to get to the mainframe and find the personnel files. But it would also help to get to the rear control room and shut down security and communications. With any luck, he won't run into Kopek, the baby-faced man in charge of the facility. The man is damn near supervillain status. This whole thing is a total crapshoot and you know it. But now's not the time for doubts; now is the time for action!

Alec reaches the door. You remind him to have the pistol out, and he opens the door. The silence is deafening, but finally you hear a whispered "It's all clear. And apparently this lock is supposed to keep people in as well as out, so I've wedged the door open. I won't be trapped if I lose the keycard somehow."

"Okay," you say, sighing with relief.
