Another soft knock. You hold your breath. Minutes pass without incident. You let your breath go in quiet relief-- you won't have to interact with any strangers today. Relaxing now, you heave yourself off of the floor. Before you can take your first step, the peaceful silence is broken.
THUD-THUD-THUD.
The air escapes your lungs in a sharp gasp, a terror induced paralysis comes over you. Each dreadful second seems stretched to infinity.
THUD-skreeeeeek-THUD-Skreeek.....THUD..SKREEEEEEEEK
The noise grows louder and louder... until it feels as if it is coming from right behind you. Your heart races. your throat burns. You feel as if you may faint. You dare not turn around- then suddenly silence.
"They must have left?"
You make your way back to the window, place you fingers between the blinds, lean in close and slowly part them.
